The power of stories

“But I haven’t got any stories to tell!”

In a world of smart machines, showing and sharing our humanity is more important than ever.

How to keep our communications human?

One way is by telling stories. The stories that only we can tell.

And yet… it’s easy to believe we’ve lost our knack for telling them.

I spent years thinking I had.

When I had an idea for a story to tell professionally, a little voice in my head said,

“Nah, it’s not exciting enough.” Or, “Ooh, too personal.”

Then I discovered the trick is to use small, everyday stories that are related to your message.

Like the time I worked with a canine coach to help change my dog’s behaviour from unruly… to attentive and engaged.

And discovered it was me that needed to learn the codes of communication – and apply them consistently.

Or find a story from your personal archives to bring a touch of humanity.

The current wave of Barbiemania around the new film reminded of my own experience as a child…

… when I put all my little girl energy into saving for the Barbie doll offer on the back of the cereal packet.

It was my first experience of setting a goal… and the feeling of fulfillment when I achieved it.

Remember: a story doesn’t have to be big.

Just enough to enchant your audience, make a point or spark an insight, and leave an indelible imprint.

Use a short story to open a presentation, pitch, meeting, townhall, training…

Your audience will be transformed.
